Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Marty Makary is reportedly expected to leave the Trump administration in the near future, unnamed White House sources told multiple outlets Friday.

It was not immediately clear if Makary would be fired or if he would leave the administration voluntarily, but it comes after the commissioner faced criticism over his handling of the agency, including his handling of the abortion drug mifepristone.

The timeline for Makary’s departure was also not clear, nor who would replace him in the role, according to Politico. Sources also cautioned CNN that President Donald Trump could still change his mind about firing the FDA chief.

The leak also comes as senior White House staffers are scheduled to meet with anti-abortion activists Friday evening who have sharply criticized both Makary and Trump for a perceived lack of action on mifepristone.

This week, Susan B. Anthony (SBA) Pro-Life America called on the Trump administration to fire Makary after he was reportedly indifferent about abortion drugs.

“FDA Commissioner Makary should be fired immediately. Indifference is completely unacceptable to millions of pro-life voters expecting the administration to act to save lives. Abortions are up, not down after Dobbs, with at least 1.1 million deaths a year. More than 90,000 abortions occur each year just in states that protect babies in the law throughout all nine months of pregnancy – a direct result of Biden’s Covid-era mail-order abortion drug rule, which the Trump administration inexplicably allows to continue,” SBA Pro-Life America President Marjorie Dannenfelser said.
